Colonel Harry Raymond Tear, Jr.

SAVANNAH - Colonel Harry Raymond Tear, Jr. U.S. Army, Retired passed away on April 5, 2014 in Atlanta, Georgia.
Col. Tear was born in Evanston, Illinois on June 27, 1935 to Harry Raymond and Gladys Warwick Tear. He matriculated from Evanston Township High School to The Citadel, where he graduated in 1957. While at The Citadel, he was a member of the Summerall Guard. Upon graduating, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He proudly served two tours of duty in Vietnam, and was awarded the Defense Superior Service Medal and Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster among other honors. He rose through the ranks in the Defense Intelligence Agency and served as the Defense and Army Attache to the U.S. Embassy in South Korea from 1981-1984.
In 1988, he retired after 30 years of service and was awarded the Legion of Merit. That same year, the family moved to Savannah, GA where he continued to serve as a contractor for the Department of Defense. He was a past President of the Oglethorpe Club, as well as an active member of St. John's Episcopal Church and The St. Andrew's Society .
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Christa Clausen Tear of Marietta, GA; son and daughter-in-law, Harry Raymond Tear III and Jennifer Bradbury Tear of Marietta, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Christa Tear Venable and Rick Venable of Sandy Springs, GA; and his grandchildren, Lauren Alina Tear and Harry Raymond Tear IV of Marietta, GA.
A graveside service will be held at Bonaventure Cemetery on April 12, 2014 at 11:00 A.M, officiated by The Rev. Gavin G. Dunbar.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made to St. John's Episcopal Church, 1 West Macon St., Savannah, GA 31401 or a charity of your choice.
